CHAPTER SEVENTEEN
âOur buddy Boo looks tired,â Posey said as she sat down at the dining room table. She had just placed a taco bake on the table; Marie was dumbfounded by how the woman could make something as simple as a taco bake seem like a gourmet meal.
âYeah, we had a busy day,â Marie said as she served herself.
It was clear that Posey was thinking of asking about this, but decided not to. She gave Boo, who was lying in the entryway between the sitting room and dining room, a final glance before filling her plate.
Dinner once again consisted of Marie and Posey sitting alone. While she technically had a guest, it was hard to view Atticus Winslow as such. He remained confined to his room and she had not heard a peep out of him since heâd checked in. There had been the one instance where she thought sheâd caught him eavesdropping on her conversation, but that was about it.
âYou hear from Mr. Winslow at all today?â Marie asked as they ate. Tonightâs dinner was delicious. It was a shame she was the only one getting to enjoy Poseyâs gift.
âNot a word,â Posey said. âAlthough, if you give me permission to do so, I think I could probably lure him out with food.â
âUse all the smells and cooking trickery you want,â Marie said. âBut heâs asked that we not physically disturb him, so Iâm going to observe that wish. Alsoâ¦you know, Posey, youâve basically become an assistant as well as a cook. Iâd like to start paying you. For right now, I canât guarantee a routine schedule but at least I can offer something.â
âYou donât need to do that, sweetie.â
âYou keep saying that, but at some point, I have to stop taking advantage of your kindness. As a matter of fact, Iâd like to write you a check in a few days.â
âI wonât keep refusing if you keep insisting,â Posey said with a smile. âWould this sudden financial generosity have anything to do with your recent side gig?â
âMaybe.â She smiled right back as she said it, leaving it at that. While Posey was more or less her only real friend in town and knew the basics about what she and Boo did when they left together, she didnât want to overwhelm the woman and potentially scare her away.
The ladies cleaned up from dinner, and Posey called it a night. Marie made a note to write her a checkâsomewhere in the neighborhood of two thousand dollars, though sheâd nearly made it for more. The woman had cooked countless breakfast and dinners, and had spent the past week or so acting as an assistant, always stepping up and being present at the manor while Marie was out and about chasing off ghosts with Boo or digging up dirt on Avery Decker.
When Posey was gone, Marie looked up the stairs. She did not go upstairs, but looked up to the top floor, thinking. She wanted to go back into that hidden room.
